Beautiful Bamboo-Flute (1971), an album of Japanese folk song covers by shakuhachi player Kuni-zan Yamamoto (1937–2014)—a native of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, who was designated a Living National Treasure in 2002—and Nobuo Hara and the Sharps & Flats, one of Japan’s leading big bands . This is a welcome reissue of the masterpiece that was first reissued on vinyl by MR BONGO in 2019.
Track List
The shakuhachi resonates against the rich, cool brass sound of Nobuo Hara and Sharps & Flats... I’ve never heard anything quite like this cool version of “Kokiriko-bushi” (sample_1), the waltz “Sado Okesa” (sample_2), the swinging “Tairyo Utaikomi” (sample_3)—I’ve never come across anything quite like it. A masterpiece that overwhelms you with excitement, emotion, groove, and so much more. (Original Japanese text by AYAM)
