*Beautiful Bamboo-Flute* (1971), an album of Japanese folk song covers by shakuhachi player Kuni-zan Yamamoto (1937–2014)—a native of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, who was designated a Living National Treasure in 2002—and Nobuo Hara and the Sharps & Flats, one of Japan’s leading big bands . This is a welcome reissue of the masterpiece that was first reissued on vinyl by *MR BONGO* in 2019.

The shakuhachi resonates against the rich, cool brass sound of Nobuo Hara and Sharps & Flats... I’ve never heard anything quite like this cool version of “Kokiriko-bushi” (sample_1), the waltz “Sado Okesa” (sample_2), the swinging “Tairyo Utaikomi” (sample_3)—I’ve never come across anything quite like it.
