North Carolina A&T State University, a historically Black college that has produced presidential candidates and future astronauts. Filled with people who lived through the civil rights era of the 1950s and '60s, the campus was a hotbed of Black excellence, activist spirit, and raw, undiscovered talent. This massive 2LP/24-track set compiles the talent discovered by Greensboro native Walter Grady, who ran six labels including Linco Records, Cobra Records, and Witch's Brew. The Opells' "You Know I Love You" ('71) (sample_1) is a sweet ballad striking a perfect balance between raw and gorgeous. True Transfusion's "No Communication" (sample_2), a groovy disco cut with superb vocal harmonies and standout solo parts, was selected last year for a compilation on the soul/boogie reissue label Miles Away and has been climbing in price — a real centerpiece here. Also included is Bridge's "Stick Your Finger In The Ground (And Turn The World Around)" (sample_3), released on Graytom Records in '77, with super funky technical drumming and cutting guitar.
