First Word Records are proud to introduce Sam Michnik, and his debut solo single ‘Inside’, featuring Lex Amor & Brother Portrait.
Sam Michnik is a Polish-born, London-based drummer, composer and music curator.
He's performed and recorded with artists like Ego Ella May, Alfa Mist, Tom Misch, Allysha Joy, CHERISE & Olivia Dean, amongst others. He also founded the legendary grassroots London collective, Unit 31; an organisation hugely influential to the city's jazz, soul and hip hop scenes for the latter half of the previous decade.
With his debut EP, ‘Mad Honey’, Michnik steps into a new chapter, channeling years of musical exploration into a sound that's unmistakably his own; rich grooves, cinematic textures and a deeply personal artistic vision.
‘Mad Honey’ features several artists Sam has built relationships with during his career, this single offering the first taste of those collaborative efforts…
Lex Amor is a North London-born rapper & musician that needs little introduction; an artist that has been omnipresent in the music scene for the past decade. With support & appearances from a multitude of places, such as COLORS, OkayPlayer, Afropunk, Boiler Room, Pitchfork, Complex and various national BBC Radio stations, being just a few.
Brother Portrait is an acclaimed artist and writer from London of Sierra Leonean heritage. He's previously worked with the likes of Oscar Jerome, Neue Grafik, Footshooter & Maxwell Owin, and appeared on releases for Touching Bass & Rhythm Section. He recently released the EP 'SUBCITY' with lovelyday3000 and has much more in the pipeline.
‘Inside’ presents the two vocalists trading thought-provoking verses over a midtempo cut produced by Michnik in a jazzy-boom bap vein, with a bed of ethereal synths & sonics laid down by pianist Nicola Guida woven into the tapestry, offering a glimpse into the vibes prominent throughout the forthcoming EP.
‘Mad Honey’ is intoxicating by design; a record built on hallucinogenic beauty and quiet unease. Rich, immersive soundscapes blend with deep harmonies and groove to create a dreamlike listening experience - one that moves between light and darkness, clarity and disorientation, letting the two coexist, rather than resolve.
Long in the making, this project introduces Sam Michnik not only as a drummer, but as a composer and musical storyteller in his own right. Put together with the support of friends and family, it's both a heartfelt debut and the start of a promising new venture for this multi-talented artist.
‘Inside’ is to be released on all digital platforms, Thurs Sep 10th, with the full EP scheduled for release later in the year.
