London based, Nottingham born multidisciplinary artist, composer and architect Emma-Kate Matthews releases Flung Further, an album made up of 8 remixes of her 2020 EP Far Flung with each remix accompanied by new video art made by Emma-Kate Matthews produced using 3D, audio reactive simulation software.
The Far Flung EP, a complex collage of dance floor adjacent electronica, was released on Algebra Records at the end of 2020 as a series of limited edition transparent lathe cut 12"s with handmade textile artwork and audio-reactive visuals.
Algebra founder Casually Here's (Hotflush Recordings, Algebra) remix of About The Light captures feelings of deep widescreen back-of-the-neck meditative ambient calm.
The euphoric driving gallop of the drums of Heavenly Stems' (Algebra) remix of 'Go With You' touch on the world of Jon Hopkins, contrasting against tempo shifted string sections and full of the glow of morning sunlight.
Upcoming producer/vocalist Julia-Sophie (BBC 6 Music, The Quietus) remix of Dreams Again gives a nod to early 90s ambient house featuring additional vocals for her.
Rinse FM resident Dampé's (Faith In Industry, Darker Than Wax, FINA Records, XVI Records) brooding remix of Go With You teases a more club-ready sound out of the atmospheres and hypnotic drums of the original.
Emma-Kate Matthews' remix of her own track 'Forgot To Swim' presents an expansion of the original, teasing out the melodic and swaggering rhythmic potential within the abstract stems which feature field recordings of metallic objects and tones generated by resonant brass instruments, made by Emma-Kate herself.
Rob Shields under his Sunplus alias (Algebra, Submarine Broadcasting Company) delivers an effervescent remix of About The Light following on in spirit from his 2020 album More Colour.
Audiovisual artist Eye Measure (Cherche Encore) delivers a sound art take on Machine Disappearing.
Multidisciplinary artist Ben McDonnell remixes 'Brightly Coloured Pencils' pushes further into the experimental sound design of the original before spinning off into a psychedelic guitar solo.
Far Flung has been played by Rebecca Gaskell on BBC Radio 3, Nic Luscombe (Late Junction) on CIC Tokyo Radio and by Dampé on Rinse FM with a 1 hour guest mix by EKM on Rinse FM on the 30th of October. Emma-Kate's animated artwork for 'Dreams Again' was nominated for the 2021 Lumen Prize for art and technology and merges footage of a digitally simulated cloth falling through space, with footage generated by artificial intelligence using a GAN (Generative Adversarial Network).
The Far Flung EP explores the contrasting styles of synthesised versus acoustic sounds, field recordings versus musical motifs and digital versus analogue techniques for producing and manipulating sounds. Eerie drones are interwoven with complex upbeat rhythms, deep layered harmonies and erratic melodies to form an elastic sonic fabric which oscillates between moments of lightweight sonic ambiguity and highly-charged musical statements.
Emma-Kate Matthews is composing a spatially-aware orchestral piece for the London Symphony Orchestra as part of the prestigious Panufnik Project, which is due for performance in March 2022. She is also currently completing her PhD on the subject of 'reciprocities between music and architecture' at the Bartlett School of Architecture where she is also currently a senior lecturer.
The remixes have been released one per week ahead of the album release on the 26th of November.
Algebra Records is run by Casually Here (Nic Nell) to support emerging artists both practically & collegiately, & to help foster artistic community & context. Upcoming releases include artists Sami El-Enany, Liam Hutton, ELY and the next Casually Here album.
