Upi Biti was recorded at FurmigaDub's home studio in João Pessoa, Paraíba, in the northeast of Brazil, using a simple piezo pickup on his rabeca (a kind of violin specific to the northeast of Brazil, having been brought there by Arab immigrants) connected to his laptop where he makes grooves based on local folkloric rhythms. He created a simple loop and began building, adding elements on top of it. From there, additional elements emerged from there... It is the exploration and upkeep of tradition, all the while being unpretentious:

"I see that many people still make music in the Brazilian tradition, but many international stereotypes.....And so it is a form of a decolonising, combining musical styles, sort of experimental, as always, of course...."

@h4wnee is responbible for the cover art, which dialogs with Furmiga's ideas about decolonizing the music and our minds about what is or isn't posssible and what is or is not part of any given genre or musical tradition?

FurmigaDub is the project of Fabiano Formiga, a multi-instrumentalist and former member the State Symphony Orchestra of Paraíba, as well as former member of various reggae, brega, sambarock and coco de roda bands. Since 201, he has been dedicated to the production of original songs, mixing music from popular culture in Paraíba with electronic music aesthetics. In addition to composing his own music, FurmigaDub records songs by popular culture masters that have never been recorded, in an effort to preserve and disseminate these unique works of Brazilian culture.
