Waz-u’s debut single Eufemie is a melodic techno track whose name takes inspiration from Deckard’s goat in Philip K Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ (which was then adapted into the iconic Blade Runner). Cyberpunk influences aside, Eufemie is a collaboration with Waz-u’s brother and co-producer in the band Monzanto Sound, namely Z Lovecraft aka Mali-I. Waz-u’s work as a drummer in the band allows for rhythmic complexity within his music, and Eufemie second guesses traditional dance music arrangement with a 3/16 cyclic polymeter, and a 6 bar chord sequence; taking modular polyrhythmic techno thats arranged in 8 bar sequences into more challenging territory.
With a direct four to the floor pulse, and swung percussion, Waz-u’s pads and bass swell and compress throughout the track; balanced by harmonic progression reminiscent of Floating Points’ most recent work. Taking on the role of mix engineer, the track was mixed live in one take by Rhythm Section affiliate Z Lovecraft, in the label studio Biodiversity - bringing sound system influences into a thinking person’s techno anthem. Sonic idents are fleshed out with delay and unique spaces formed with cavernous reverb and modulation effects. Classic IDM artifacts are incorporated with dashes of FM percussion, harking back to artists like Autechre and current innovators like Rival Consoles. With an album ‘Prayer For Dawn’ dropping before the end of the year and another single on the way,Eufemie is a perfect introduction to the sound of Waz-u.
