Monica Avila is a distinguished Brazilian saxophonist, flautist, and composer whose work spans collaborations with iconic names such as Alcione, Criolo, Ney Matogrosso, and Bia Ferreira. She is a founding member of the pioneering Brazilian afrobeat band, Abayomy, as well as the carioca, all-female group, Orquestra Lunar. With a master’s degree in music education from UNIRIO and a deep connection to cultural activism and capoeira, her artistic output is informed by a strong sociocultural foundation.
Her debut solo release “Obatalá é Rei” is a richly textured tribute to the orixá Obatalá, featuring a traditional Yoruba invocation and rooted in Afro-Brazilian rhythmic language. Alongside the emotional “Caminho Curto, Caminho Longo,” a homage to her brother and childhood memories, the release blends spiritual depth with rhythmic finesse. Featuring seven-string guitarist Samara Líbano and percussionist Alexandre Garnizé, the recording was made in an intimate studio setting, showcasing high-level musicality with heartfelt storytelling.
