Him & Earlreturn with another deeply uplifting and sonically satisfying slice offolk- and Americana-tinged acoustic soulon Wah Wah 45s.“Away”, out 3rdApril,is the second single to be unveiled from the duo’s upcoming debut album.

Singer-songwriterOlly Himand DJ, producer and composerWyndham Earlboth have deeply-dug roots in the south coast of England, with the former making his name as a solo artist before exploring his soulful folk sound with a number of live acts, and the latter collaborating on albums and sharing stages with Bonobo, Khruangbin, Alice Russell and TM Juke, having remixes released by Tru Thoughts and Mr Bongo Records, and releasing his solo projects on his Time Spun imprint.

The pair first met in 2015 when Wyndham produced some songs for now defunct hypnotic Afro-folk outfit Creatures Of The Deep, of which Olly was a founder member. They instantly clicked, but after the group broke up it wasn’t until some years later that serendipity brought them back together. A chance encounter at a gig led the duo to reignite their fire for working together, and they began to hatch plans to make a full album under the name ofHim & Earlwith Olly writing the songs and Wyndham arranging and producing the project.

With its sonorous yet strangely uplifting and mellifluous feel, their forthcoming full-length debut, entitledFalling Backwards, is a mystic brew ofdesert blues, English folk, Americanaandstirring southern soul, with tentacles stretching out intopsychedeliaandprog.

“Away”is about moving on from something that has held you back in the past, embracing the unknown and seeing the opportunities in starting afresh with a new chapter in your life. These are themes we can all relate to of course, but also pinpoint specific moments in Olly’s journey, as the man himself explains:

“This is one of my older songs and was written at the time I was playing with my old band, Creatures of the Deep. At the time I had a complicated family situation that was heading in a new more positive direction and the song related to this, but also more generally about one door opening and another closing at different points in life and trying to approach the unknown in a positive way.

It was originally performed as a guitar and vocal harmony song, but when we came to record it, Andy (Wyndham Earl) suggested horn and violin arrangements to make the song more uplifting and dynamic in keeping with the theme.

With Jack Baker’s drums giving the song its groove, my old friend Jo Gardner recorded violin from her home in Amsterdam and Cleo Savva (trumpet) and Tom Sapir (percussion) recorded their parts in St Leonard’s and Brighton to bring the song to its final version.”

“Away” is a melancholic yet ultimately uplifting song that fits perfectly with the change in the seasons and might just be the ultimate springtime anthem for 2026!

Into the outside, in the unknown, into the outside, into tomorrow….

At the debut Him & Earl live show in late January, Olly and Wyndham’s fittingly modest expectations for this step into the unknown were immediately blown out of the water as the five-piece band went toe to toe with a sellout crowd of eager music fans. That sweaty room full of happy faces on a cold January night – throwing shapes to the live percussion showdowns, losing themselves in the psychedelic guitar and bass wig-outs, and singing along to the choruses of songs that they’d never heard a note of before – bodes well for some exciting times ahead for Him & Earl.
