First Word Records is proud to bring you 'Kiss it Better', the brand new self-produced single from Allysha Joy.
The first solo offering since the release of her pivotal album ‘The Making of Silk’ which sent her soaring on a first world tour, lifted on the wings of great praise, conscious intention and a true resonance for her work.
Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, ‘Kiss It Better’ sonically evokes the spirit of a Prince or Meshell Ndegeocello track, whilst the DC connection comes through with influence from Dreamcast Moe, one of Allysha’s frequent collaborators. It’s all woven into her signature sound; raw vocals, unexpected harmonic shifts and subtle, pulsing rhythmic complexity.
Thematically, Allysha says “I was with Thhomas at our house from years back in the 3070 area code, he was showing me a new song, side stepping on the guitar with the drum machine rolling, descending chords on every phrase “can I kiss it better, pull away with the pain” — I woke up suddenly from the dream, finding myself in a big four poster bed in New Orleans on the edge of the Bywater, mid October. I ran to the upright piano downstairs, desperately holding on to the song he had gifted me. This one is for the original 30/70 family that shared every piece of their musical knowledge; the rhythms, the records, the production, a blessing that continues to unfold.”

Allysha Joy is a deeply prolific singer, songwriter, producer, musician, lover of music and poetry. From nurturing her talents in her native city of Melbourne (Naarm), to touring and performing in various countries across the globe, to building firm roots in the UK, she has become a prominent player in the soul, jazz & broken beat circuits, widely revered by her peers and beyond.
In 2025, she was nominated as ‘Soul Act of the Year’ at the Jazz FM awards. Her 2018 debut album was named ‘Best Soul Album’ at the Music Victoria Awards, nominated for ‘Best Jazz Album’ at the Worldwide Awards, and her album releases have since featured in numerous end-of-year ‘Best Of’ lists, as well as other award nods for her songwriting and extensive presence in the scene.
She’s received support from various luminaries in the music industry, including Brian Jackson, Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova (BBC 6 Music), Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), Laurent Garnier (PBB France), China Moses (Jazz FM), OkayPlayer, Dazed and The Vinyl Factory, as just a few examples. She is also an accomplished broadcaster & DJ in her own right, hosting shows for the likes of Worldwide FM, The Lot Radio (NYC) & Soho Radio (LDN).
An outstanding live performer, Allysha has graced the stage at Montreux Jazz Festival, NYC Winter Jazz, We Out Here, Blue Note Tokyo and hundreds more. She’s played alongside acts such as Snarky Puppy, PJ Morton, The Teskey Brothers, Jordan Rakei and Kokoroko, and featured on countless releases from folks such as Makèz, IG Culture and Joy Spheres Rees (BBE Music), while also fronting her collaborative project, 30/70.
This latest offering continues onwards from her impeccable catalogue of releases, and illustrates an artist that lives for musical expression; that straddles the delicate lines of strength & vulnerability in equal measure, confidently & consistently producing exemplary work that proves she is entirely comfortable in her lane, and has an abundance of talent to continue to offer to the music game.
