An album from steelpan player/singer Tonchi. A masterpiece featuring an equally eccentric cast of guests including Oorutaichi and U-zhaan. Song and space. Late, but now in stock!

A 2019 work by Tonchi, an artist who commands enormous trust from domestic mavericks like Taikuutaikan and Oorutaichi, and who navigates the scene with a distinctive style — placing a strange, dignified singing voice atop the tropical resonance of the steelpan — and a spirited personality. This is a trio record with Makoto Inada (bass, chorus) and Nahoko Kamei (piano, keyboard, soprano sax, chorus). As you can tell from "Rongorongo," which is built on the folklore of Taiwan's Bunun people, this is an album of "song" that somehow evokes Asian folk music and stirs a sense of nostalgia. Wondering just what this feeling was, I realized it's close to the charm of Argentine records. There's a singing heart and space, plus a faint psychedelia. That said, it also carries a strange accent that music consciously aimed at South America could never produce. The indigenous elements that seep out sync up with all sorts of music being made today, and it has the air of a lovely little piece brimming with a floating quality.
