Drawing inspiration from the historical and contemporary African American cultural identity—traceable all the way back to Sun Ra and George Clinton—this work blends that heritage with modern electronic music in a perfect balance. It’s a strange, unique, and wonderful piece that carries on the best of the traditional Detroit sound. Powerful floor-fillers like Sample 1, “Needlelike”—a track featuring irregular time signatures and imaginative electronic sounds—and Sample 2, “Melt,” which caused a stir when Theo Parrish played it at his Osaka show last year. Sample 3, “Remote Viewer,” a strange electronic track that warps time and space, is absolutely incredible. The rest of the tracks are also all wonderfully crafted and easy to play.
