A recording from Sun Ra’s only concert in Japan during his lifetime, held on August 8, 1988, at the Shinjuku Pit-In. Amid the frenzied percussion, cutting through the drums—I believe it’s Marshall Allen—is a spirited, freaky saxophone solo that weaves in the melody of the children’s song “Sakura, Sakura,” and Sun Ra begins to pluck along as if to accompany him. It’s a performance brimming with energy—I’ve been thrilled from the very start. They also perform classics like “We Travel the Space Ways” and “Space Is the Place.” I was contacted by Cascade Delete right around the time of the cassette release. I’ve got copies in stock!
