"Dear HMRC" (Stan parody)

A rapper-accountant turns HMRC hold music into a January protest anthem

Dear HMRC is a tax-season protest song disguised as a rap parody — written and performed by The Rebel Accountant, a UK-based chartered tax adviser who also happens to be a serious hip-hop artist.

Inspired by Eminem’s Stan, the track replaces obsessive fan letters with unanswered emails, recorded-delivery envelopes, and endless hours on hold to HMRC. The lyrics are entirely original, the music reworked from scratch, and the target is unmistakable: the shared January experience of trying — and failing — to speak to anyone at HMRC before the self-assessment deadline.

This isn’t novelty rap or a comedy sketch. It’s cultural commentary from someone who lives inside the tax system every day. By day, The Rebel Accountant advises entrepreneurs, founders, and high-net-worth individuals on complex UK tax matters. By night, he writes sharp, technically accurate rap about bureaucracy, pressure, and the emotional reality of compliance.

The hook lands because it’s true. Millions of taxpayers leave things until January. Phones don’t get answered. Letters go missing. Anxiety spikes. Dear HMRC captures that frustration with humour, anger, and surprising empathy — for taxpayers and advisers alike.

Released on 1 January as part of the Rebel Accountant project, the song kicks off a month-long run of tax-season content, culminating in a live documentary and performance event on the 31 January deadline day.

Think: hip-hop meets public administration.
A January anthem for anyone who’s ever heard, “Your call is important to us.”
