"A Necessary Coincidence," a performance by John Cage—the father of American contemporary music—and his close collaborator David Tudor, presented in the summer of 1965 at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in Los Angeles. A 2016 clear vinyl analog LP reissue from Modern Harmoni of “Variations IV,” a masterpiece of collage sounds and indeterminate music. Unearthed from stock.

Released in 1966 by EVEREST RECORDS, this is a valuable record of the unique concepts and practices—in the broadest sense—that served as the origin of today’s sampling-based dance music (such as hip-hop, house, and techno) and collage sounds. Mastered from the original tapes and reissued as a limited-edition clear vinyl LP. The fact that David Tudor—who played shortwave radio and electronic sounds—is credited as “Sound System” is just too cool. A masterpiece by Modern Harmoni. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
