This work can be seen as both an exploration of the keyword “ambient” and a quiet, up-to-date report on the current state of contemporary improvisational jazz.
It begins with Kasim Nakvi’s modular synth (sample 3). Tracks by BlankFor.ms—who released music on Leaving Records and has performed in Japan—and the poet Moor Mother (who also wrote the album’s liner notes) are particularly emblematic (sample 1). Kalia Vandever, who has also released ambient jazz works under the name “Inter national anthem,” contributes to the album. The closing track by Kit Downs—who is also famous for his ECM release featuring recordings of pipe organs installed in three British churches—is truly remarkable (sample 2). As hinted by the involvement of Sun Chung, formerly of ECM, this is such a highly anticipated release that listening sessions have been organized specifically for it.
