Derege is the first joint single by the two musicians from Maputo and Berlin. Bahule's pan-African rhythm language originated as a post-colonial artefact: she grew up in Mozambique without speaking any African language - only Portuguese and English. What began as a crisis became a drive. She turned the deficit into an instrument and invented a language without lexical meaning - a rhythm language that draws its power from sound and intention, and in which she can improvise fluently. Much is unmistakably inscribed in this language: making music means building an identity, empowering yourself, finding words for what cannot be spoken - and stepping beyond your own borders into direct contact with others. On Derege, that contact runs through the legs.
