FELIX KUBIN has released an ambitious new work featuring one extended track on each side. Side A features “Max Brand Studie IV,” a track created specifically to be played through eight loudspeakers arranged in a circle, using the Max Brand synthesizer—a rare instrument modified from a Moog synthesizer. The track on the other side was created for a video by Josephin Böttger and features another rare, hard-to-find synthesizer built by DIY synth builder Rob Hordijk. The sound has a quality that feels like a direct legacy from Stockhausen to the present day, and the sounds—emitted amid a tension reminiscent of a predator lying in wait for its prey—are quite stimulating. There’s no doubt it would have been even more mind-blowing when listened to on a multi-channel system, but even on a two-channel setup, its awesomeness comes through clearly.
