The “now” of Japan’s 2020s music scene—a scene that may one day be given a name. “S.D.S.” attempts to capture the “vibe” that permeates production scenes where hype holds no sway. Featuring 12 self-produced tracks by 17 creators and 3 behind-the-scenes staff—8 of whom have never released physical media, and 12 of whom have never released on vinyl—this is an anthology from a generation that has experienced music primarily through streaming, downloads, and YouTube.

All tracks on S.D.S are rooted in DIY home recording—so much so that the term “bedroom pop” feels unnecessary—and feature an interweaving of musical languages such as electronic music, trap, indie pop, bass music, and EDM/ADM. While the expressions are hip-hop-inspired, the tracks often veer away from the mainstream hip-hop scene—leaning more toward electronic music—or vice versa; there are even bizarre works that defy easy description. The album is full of tracks that will baffle critics, but it is precisely this amalgamation that lies at the heart of its authenticity. This phenomenon is common among the creators of “S.D.S,” which is precisely why it’s important to listen closely to each artist individually to see what kind of music they’re making right now.
