Nigeria 70 - The Definitive Story Of 1970's Funky Lagos
Strut - Cat No: STRUT044LP
- updated:2026-11-05
A compilation of Afrobeat classics that I’ve personally loved and been influenced by for years. As the first installment in the “Nigeria 70” series, it truly lives up to its reputation as the definitive collection of 1970s funky Lagos sounds. It’s a superb 3-CD set. If you’re on the fence, I definitely think you should go ahead and buy it.

From legends like KING SUNNY ADE, FELA KUTI, and ORLANDO JULIUS to the musicians and bands from Logos, Nigeria—whose work was later rediscovered and reissued individually, bringing them widespread recognition. Their sense of rhythm is simply breathtaking. Because they were a strong and resilient people, they were transported via the slave trade to the north, central, South America, and the Caribbean—sowing the seeds of music—the Yoruba people. This album captures the allure of entertainment and resistance music cultivated in the ghettos of Lagos, one of Africa’s leading cities, while intertwining with the funk and psychedelic rock movements. A string of Afrobeat gems! Originally released in 2001, it was remastered and reissued in 2012, and has now been pressed on vinyl for the first time in 10 years. A 3-LP gatefold sleeve. The inside of the gatefold is packed with detailed commentary on each artist. A welcome reissue. Don’t miss it. (Original Japanese text by Saito)
