A musical composition written by Joshua Abrams for Lisa Alvarado’s 2023 exhibition “Pulse Meridian Foliation” in Los Angeles. Originally played on a loop as a four-channel installation at the gallery, Abrams himself has now reworked it into a stereo recording. Featuring James Sanders on two violas, Alvarado herself on the harmonium, and Abrams’ electronics, the piece unfolds as leisurely as an elephant’s yawn—a stratum of sound built upon gentle repetition and subtle variations. This exceptional release gradually draws the listener into a blissful ambient jam. Mastered by Rashad Becker. The exhibition takes the process of foliation—in which pressure applied to rock causes mineral layers to transform—as its motif, exploring themes such as the history of the forced deportation of Mexicans and memories accumulated across generations of a family.
