In the 1960s, he led his own band, The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, which released original works, including a tribute to Malcolm X, which is still a highly regarded collector's item.
He is also known as an educator and mentor, influencing the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire and Chaka Khan, and was a spiritual pillar of The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a Chicago brass band with eight sons.
