He's also a member of the popular Swedish psychedelic quartet Dina Ögon, and has already left behind a wealth of wonderful soft-psych material, so we were excited from the moment this solo album was announced. Highly recommended! (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

The shakuhachi resonates against the rich, cool brass sound of Nobuo Hara and Sharps & Flats... I’ve never heard anything quite like this cool version of “Kokiriko-bushi” (sample_1), the waltz “Sado Okesa” (sample_2), the swinging “Tairyo Utaikomi” (sample_3)—I’ve never come across anything quite like it. A masterpiece that overwhelms you with excitement, emotion, groove, and so much more. (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

Studio Rio is a project by Frank and Christian Bahlmann, who are known for producing 1990s pop hits by artists such as Hanson, the Baha Men, and Cher, and are Grammy Award winners. Based on the idea, “What would it sound like if classic American soul songs were recorded in Rio de Janeiro with the best Brazilian musicians?” the project meticulously ...Read more (Original Japanese text by AYAM)isolates the original vocals and features skilled Brazilian musicians who arrange and cover the original vocal tracks, creating an anthology album that stands head and shoulders above typical cover compilations: The Brazil Connection (2014). From that collection, following our previous feature on Bill Withers, this track reimagines Marvin Gaye’s timeless classic “Sexual Healing” as a samba brimming with a refreshing Brazilian groove. The B-side, with its paradisiacal vibe focused on high-quality instrumentation, is also excellent. (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

Released in 2019, this third installment features special content that can be considered a 30th-anniversary commemorative release marking the label’s start in 1989. It includes the 1973 samba-soul classic “A Gira” by TRIO TERNURA, with its dynamic chants and percussion and harmonies that captivate even soft rock fans (sample_1), and the rare groove ...Read more (Original Japanese text by AYAM) classic “Don’t Stop” (sample_2) by SPACEARK—originally released only on 7-inch vinyl in 1976 in LA—is included here in a previously unreleased extended version. What a treat! (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

This ultra-rare album—which was featured by Gilles Peterson on his radio show as one of “The 20 South African Jazz” albums—is so sought-after on the collector’s market that first-press copies sometimes sell for £1,000. Side B features Horace Silver’s “Doodlin’” and Coltrane’s “Bessie’s Blues” (sample_3). A beautiful treasure on par with Coltrane and Wayne Shorter, created by musicians who escaped the harsh apartheid regime of 1968. Don’t miss this opportunity to add it to your collection. Reissued in response to overwhelming demand! Two tracks from Célia's 1972 self-titled album get the reissue treatment.
The A-side is a cover of "Na Boca Do Sol" (sample_1), written and arranged by Arthur Verocai and Vitor Martins, originally featured on the album "Arthur Verocai" released that same year, 1972. Dynamic fuzz guitar and Célia's imp ...Read more (Original Japanese text by AYAM)assioned vocals give the song a moving quality distinct from the original. The B-side, "A Hora é Essa" (sample_2), which opens Célia's album, is a vibrant samba-funk number colored by jazzy piano phrases, strutting guitar and powerful horns. These two tracks were also released as a 7-inch on 〈Continental Records Brazil〉 in 1972, now a hard-to-find rarity. (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

(AYAM)

The album's opener, "Na Na" (sample_1), is a Latin funk cut whose na-na-na hook and wah guitar stick in your head; the track was used on the soundtrack to the Netflix series "Griselda" (a biopic of Griselda Blanco, the Miami/Cuban crime boss), and plenty of listeners must have found their way to Coke through the show. "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" (sample1) is a classic break sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow, N.W.A and Run D.M.C. to Masters At Work — heavyweights of hip-hop, dance and pop alike. Originally it was released simultaneously on Alston Records and Electric Cat, with different versions of "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" pressed on each. The former carr ...Read more (Original Japanese text by AYAM)ied a 4:12 version, while the latter featured a longer 5:09 version with crowd noise and overdubbed percussion added to the intro. This MR BONGO edition, with its emphasis on B-boy culture, follows "Ultimate Breaks & Beats" and includes the classic Alston Records 4:12 version. (Confusingly, the back cover artwork of the Alston version lists the track length as 5:09 while the center label correctly states 4:12 — and that quirk has been faithfully reproduced here.) Beyond that track, the album also holds underrated gems like "Who's The Funky D.J.?" (sample2), a hot disco-funk groove with a long session passage full of tangled percussion, and the Latin-tinged "A Refreshing Love." A hip-hop cultural treasure and a disco-funk classic — don't miss this chance! (Original Japanese text by AYAM)

(AYAM)

(AYAM)

(AYAM)
