Her neutral voice and songs are appealing, and the acoustic and electronic backing tracks are exquisite, making this a wonderful and long-loved album. Please give it a try. The hazy ring of nylon strings lends it an intimacy akin to chamber music.

While you can hear the traditional folk lineage of Vashti Bunyan she's so often compared to, she establishes a world entirely her own, glancing sideways at the ambient currents running through recent American indie.
Personally, more than British/American trad or acid folk, it brought to mind the psychedelia of Brazilian/South American artists like Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, where darkness and gentleness coexist. Somehow there's a quiet earthiness to it too.

She emerged in the 2010s, but the atmosphere she carries was arguably ahead of its time. Pitchfork recently republished a review of her older work, too.
Her own phrase, "dissolving reality and fantasy," says a lot about her world.

Her lovely voice drifts with a fragile precariousness, yet she never simply spills emotion nor surrenders the music to it — there's a dignified backbone and warmth to it, and once you're in, you'll find yourself hitting repeat.

The great "This Time Around" (sample1), "Here My Love" (sample2), "Crossing" (sample3). Every track is just too good.
Let's wait for spring. (Original Japanese text by Shhhhh)

This magical album, Pantilde, by The Worm—an avant-folk performance artist from Cornwall—is an imaginary tale of oral tradition and music that depicts the daily life of a Celtic village in a strange, otherworldly land: a place that feels otherworldly yet is somehow rooted in reality. Amy Lawrence, the musician known as The Worm, sings while playing acoustic instruments such as the cello, harp, recorder, and percussion in a ritualistic atmosphere; her rich voice is sometimes overdubbed, elevating it into a beautiful, rustic vocal ensemble. Using her voice, Lawrence weaves narrative songs depicting mythical and mystical village life and landscapes, as well as the relationship between humans and the natural world. The Worm is a talent that appears like a mutant in the musical lineage of Dorothy Carter, The Incredible String Band, Vashti Bunyan, the Shovel Dance Collective, Bridget St. John, Jessica Pratt, Kathryn Howe, Mary Latimore, Tristoph i Fenewood. Pantilde is an astonishing avant-garde folk fantasy—a time-travel journey to a dreamlike pastoral world that nonetheless possesses a distinct sense of reality. The cover artwork, reminiscent of the Celtic legend of the little people who dwell underground, is by Lawrence, and “Pantilde” is the name of the donkey in the photograph. The CD includes liner notes and lyrics—written in a style reminiscent of ancient manuscripts—in both English and Japanese by The Worm himself. The CD edition exclusively features a bonus remix by Yama Warashi.
