Some recordings are preserved with a faint, ephemeral soundscape, conveying the intention to capture the raw atmosphere as if the listener were actually present at the live performance. It is also interesting that, unusually for this type of compilation, no definitive concept or statement was established; instead, the focus is purely on the exchange of raw, high-purity music and sensory experiences. Through HOW YOU BEEN and their 2024 debut album SMALL MEDIUM LARGE (both of which were heavily edited and post-produced), SML has established a reputation for their meticulously crafted sound. In these works, “editing” as a medium takes center stage; the pieces are constructed by carefully selecting and editing the most compelling fragments.
However, the source material for both of these albums consists entirely of live recordings—improvisations that unfold in long, undulating waves of raw groove. More importantly, every single one of the band’s performances to date has been performed as a complete improvisation in keeping with that spirit.
This duality can also be seen in artists who could be considered their ideological kin. For example, the lengthy, unrestrained performances on Can’s Live in Paris 1973 contrast with the more compact Future Days, released the same year. Or consider the chaotic, high-speed funk of Miles Davis’s Dark Magus versus the thoroughly deconstructed structures found on On the Corner and Big Fun.
Spontaneous Music Live is a work that strips away this curatorial perspective and peels back the curtain on the editing process. What remains is the psychedelic realism of a band performing collective improvisation, existing in that very moment in the city of Los Angeles. It is music that, while fully present in the moment, unearths moments of discovery. There, each individual sound is scattered like stars between collective chaos and control, serving as fragments that could become future SML tracks. (From the label information)

In 1969, 19-year-olds Marc Orander and Paolo Radoni formed the band “Here and Now,” which played a fusion of psychedelic rock and free jazz. Subsequently, from 1973 to 1977, Marc Hollander undertook a series of solo recordings and collaborations, exploring further elements that would form the backbone of Aksak Maboul’s music. This album, compiled from long-forgotten open-reel tapes and cassette tapes, documents the journey leading up to the formation of Aksak Maboul between 1969 and 1977, capturing moments of experimentation and sound sketches ranging from free rock, improvisation, krautrock, psychedelia, experimental music, and modular electronic music to ambient electronics, chamber music piano pieces, percussion, stationery, toy instruments, and more—a valuable record documenting various experiments and moments of soundscapes. 17 tracks, 80 minutes; CD + booklet (a total of 4 tracks—TR6–7 and 16–17—are available exclusively on the CD) A precious record capturing how sounds reminiscent of Ax-Kumabour—blending chamber music with exotic, stateless ambient, minimalist, and avant-garde qualities—gradually emerge and take shape from lo-fi, DIY, improvised free music. This release compiles improvisations recorded at various times starting in 2015.
It is a work where, if you listen closely, you can perceive subtle, unintended shifts in pitch and textures that emerge spontaneously.
In the pieces on Side A, he plays with extreme down-tuning and detuned tunings, which serve as the driving force behind the creation of a unique texture.

Masubuchi’s approach to performance is directed toward “disappearance beyond close observation.”
This is the opposite of a blind approach; he aims for a more primal state of music.

In classical Andalusian music, the piano—an instrument of Western origin—occupied a lowly position, and it is said that Skandrani’s performance style, which he essentially pioneered, led to his works being treated as heretical. The reason for this was that, prior to his time, solo piano performances were unheard of in Andalusian music concerts, and ...Read more the very idea of performing “Istiqbal” (a style of Andalusian court music) on the piano would never have occurred to anyone else; it is said to have caused quite a stir at the time.
Algerian classical music is characterized by the fusion of Andalusian court music—which originated with the Arab-Islamic dynasties of Spain—and Turkish classical music, and it has also been influenced by Western, indigenous African, and Jewish traditions, resulting in a distinctive blend of Eastern and Western cultures. “Istiqbal” is a prelude to the court music suite form known as “Nauba” (or “Nouba”), and it exists in several modes (forms). In this work, a single mode is first played and presented as the theme, followed by variations to form a set; the piece includes a total of nine sets of modes. The accessible charm of this work lies in the way Oriental, Western, and African elements elegantly intersect on the keyboard; the sounds woven from the piano move as if traveling back and forth between the East and West, forming a single delicate thread.
